In every old city in the world you'll find statues of mythical creatures, to help ward off evil or as a show of strength. However since arriving in Copenhagen I started to notice an abundance of dragons. There are of course plenty of other creatures on display such as Mermaids, elephants and lions, but these were easily outnumbered by dragons. It would be understandable if there was a specific legend about Denmark and dragons, but I can't find anything other than the Beowulf story of him fighting a dragon or that some viking ships had a dragons head protruding from either the bow or the stern, and asking local Danes hasn't thrown anymore light on the puzzle.
Another curiosity is that children's playgrounds in Copenhagen have an abundance of wooden dragons for children to play on. A couple of Danes have said that since dragons are creatures from the imagination, then this is good to help children development creativity. However this doesn't answer the question why there are only dragons and not other creatures such as unicorns or mermaids.

Note: Some of the 'dragons' I've found, could technically be some other type of mythical creature such as a Gryphon, but let's not let details get in the way.
